When someone needs legal services how many attorneys should they contact before making a decision on what firm to hire and why?
To help you best decide on the number of attorneys to contact when in need of legal services, we asked legal professionals and business leaders this question for their best recommendations. There are several numbers recommended with their respective justification to help you make the best decision about how many attorneys to contact before settling on one for your legal services.
Here are five recommendations these leaders offer to anyone about how many attorneys they should contact:
- Three to Five Attorneys
- Between 5 and 10 Attorneys
- At Least Two
- Minimum of Three Attorneys
- 3 or 4 Attorneys
Three to Five Attorneys
If someone needs legal services, it’s best to contact three to five attorneys before making a decision on which firm to hire. There are many reasons for this. The first is that it helps ensure you’re getting the most accurate information about your case and the best possible representation. You want to make sure that the attorney you choose has experience with the type of case you have, and it’s hard to know that without asking around. Another reason is that it shows your prospective attorney that you’re serious about hiring them, and they’ll be more likely to take your case seriously as well. You also need time to get a feel for each attorney, so having multiple conversations will help give you a better idea of which one is right for you.

Between 5 and 10 Attorneys
Before you can accurately identify the appropriate attorney to represent you, you must determine which type of attorney is best equipped to address and resolve your issue. Develop a list of prospective candidates by speaking with business advisers, industry professionals, other attorneys, and other reliable sources. Consult the websites of law firms, online resources, bar associations, and other referral networks. The following stage is to reduce the list of probable applicants to a reasonable number of recommended prospects, between 5 and 10. Then, contact each of the preferred applicants and conduct an in-person interview.

At Least Two
Once you have some options, plan to talk to at least two lawyers before you choose someone to represent you. Depending on your income and other circumstances, you may be eligible for free or low-cost legal help, so that’s something to consider as well. It’s crucial to find a lawyer who specializes in your area of legal need, so take the time to search for the right lawyer. Check with your state or local bar associations, and/or consult lawyer referral services via a community group or union you belong to. Also, consider asking family, friends, or co-workers for recommendations, but no matter what be sure to talk to more than one attorney to make a well-informed decision on a firm that best fits your needs.

Minimum of Three Attorneys
Hiring a legal professional is vital for your business’s welfare. Therefore, asking for recommendations from friends, family, and associates can get you suitable suggestions. Choose at least three of the suggestions to compare through consultations to get a chance to know the attorneys better. Ask about their fees rate and the chances of succeeding in the court case. Settle for the one you are able to pay the fees. Reviewing payment arrangements assures you of uninterrupted service, reducing your chances of you/business becoming a liability to a lawsuit.

3 or 4 Attorneys
I would recommend 3 or 4 attorneys. When you are looking for an attorney, it’s important to find the right lawyer for your case. Attorneys are not all created equal and some are better suited for certain types of cases than others. I would recommend contacting 3 or 4 different attorneys before making your decision on who to hire because there is no way to know how they will handle your case until they have reviewed all of the facts surrounding it and discussed them with you in detail. If an attorney is unwilling to meet with you upfront and discuss what options are available for your particular situation then they probably aren’t interested in taking on your case.
